FAQ's

Is it safe in this area?

Yes, this area is quite safe. In fact, a lot of wealthy people from Mexico City often move their families to the area because it's a relatively safe environment. If anything, there is a small problem with theft. Be diligent and keep any valuables with you, such as passports and money, while traveling. We also recommend that you stay on the major highways while traveling after dark. If you were to encounter any car trouble, on the back roads at night, it may be difficult to find assistance.

Does my cell phone work in the area?

Yes, cell phones hooked up to the Telus and Bell networks work in the area. While in the house, however, you may have to go out toward the paved road to obtain service (one block). We recommend that you only power up your cell phones when you are planning to use them.

What should we take for currency and where is the best place to get it exchanged?

Instead of traveling with awkward traveller's cheques we recommend using bank machines to withdraw funds directly from your Canadian account. Banks such as Scotia Bank, HSBC etc had instant teller machines throughout the cities that have the best exchange rate possible Please note that you can only withdraw 3,000 pesos per day from a single bank machine. The following types of debit cards are accepted at the major banks: Master-card, Cirrus, Visa, Plus, and Maestro.

Is it safe to drink the water there?

No it is not. The house has two containers with potable water, one in the kitchen and the other in the bathroom. Not even the locals risk drinking the tap water.

Are there any bugs or insects to be concerned about?

Mexico is a tropical part of the world, there will be encounters with bugs of some sort. We have rarely seen a cockroach in the house but if you do see one pesticide is located on the shelf behind the front door. The door to the beach can remain open all day without attracting flies into the house, but only if you immediately rinse off your dishes after eating. If at night you hear a loud creaking noise similar to a cricket, do not be alarmed. It is probably a small gecko. They are about 3 inches in length and hang out around the outside lights at night to catch small insects. They are harmless.

Where can I check my email?

There are four or five internet cafes in Progresso. Most are located near the town center. To access your email, simply go to a free computer and start using it. Once you are finished, approach the person who operates the cafe for a total. It generally costs about 10 pesos for an hour of use.

What if we have a problem with something at the house or with something during our trip?

If you have a problem that you cannot solve you may go to Petra's house and ask her for assistance. She speaks very good English and knows most of the people in the town. Directions to her house will be given out once you have agreed to rent the house. As well, a list of phone numbers of English speaking people located in the area will be given to you prior to your departure.   If you walk up and down the road behind the house you will find the odd house owned by white folks. If home they will be glad to help you out.

What do we do if we get sick?

There is a medical clinic that is open from 8 AM till 1 PM and from 4 PM to 6 PM everyday, located about a half a mile from the house. Also, there is a major hospital in Progresso.
