Go to a mass in the local Chelem church. If you don't know spanish, you won't understand a word, but it is a unique experience. Have your picture taken with one on local ladies wearing their traditional Mayan dresses.
Go out for a walk on the Malecon, then go for dinner at one of the many restaurants on this romantic boardwalk located along the beach. Go souvenir and gift shopping. Most places have a waiter or two who will speak some English. In Mexico, most restaurants won't open before 7 pm. (The best time to go is when there is a cruise ship in town. Ask at the tourist office located directly below the lighthouse when the next ship will be docked.) The souvenir kiosks are located directly below the lighthouse, as well as along the Malecon.
To get the best deals, go to the tables run by young men. Start by offering half of the asking price. If you barter hard enough, you should pay no more than two thirds of the asking price.
The local market is located across the street from the lighthouse in a large concrete building. Things are usually bustling by 7 am. If you want to cook fish for dinner this is the best place to buy it. This is an authentic market, which means there is no refrigeration, and it may smell a bit.
Rent a kayak and go for a paddling tour of the mangroves. You will be able to view a plethora of bird species. This is located 2 blocks west of Bodega Aurrera.
This city of 1 million people was named the cultural city of the Americas in 2000. Merida is just a short 35 minute drive from Chelem.
Located throughout the city are very large and impressive mansions that used to be owned by Henican plantation families. Red double decker buses leave on the hour from infront of the Grand Cathedral, and the two-hour tour costs 100 pesos (about $12).
The Grand Cathedral which is located in the town center. Doors to the building close at 7 pm.
the Government building which is also located in the town center. On the second (or top) floor are large, magnificent paintings which uniquely portray the history of the Yucatan.
This mall is located on the north end of Merida as you enter the city from Progresso. It is similar in size and quality to Calgary's Chinook Mall and rumours have it that there are good prices on brand-named clothing.
The open-air tour will take you around to see some of the local sites located near the town center. Most buggies depart from the town center and cost about 100 pesos for a 30 minute ride, but remember, this is Mexico - everything is up for negotiation.
Dzibilchaltun is a Mayan ruin that is located just off the main highway between Progresso and Merida. It takes approximately 25 minutes to get there from the house and is a must see if you are looking for a unique half-day trip. These ruins stretch over a 20 km-square area and contain over 8,000 buildings. Take along your bathing suits and towel - as located in the heart of the ruins is a cenote (a fresh-water pool) in which you can swim. (Note: As you travel throughout the Yucatan Province, you will never see rivers or streams. All flowing water in this area is underground. As a result, most ancient Mayan cities are built in close proximity to areas where a river touches the surface (cenotes). It is from these cenotes that the Mayans drew their daily water and into which they offered many of their precious metal sacrifices to their gods. In most locations, cenotes are made available for tourists to swim in.)
Uxmal is a large Mayan ruin located south of Merida. It takes approximately 90 minutes to get there from the house. As far as the locals are concerned, these are the most magnificent ruins in the Yucatan Province. Uxmal is noted for its evening light show and it is recommended that upon arrival you obtain a tour guide to explain the site's history. Tour guides cost approximately 350 pesos and are done in English. Also, bring enough water for the day because this part of the province can get very hot.
Chichen Itza is the most visited Mayan ruin in the Yucatan. It is known for its Great Pyramid, which is a challenge for all to climb. These ruins cover a 30 km-square area and are rich in cenotes. In its time, Chichen Itza was the center of power for the Yucatan Province. If you are planning a trip to these ruins for the day plan to visit the majestic cenote of Diznip as well, located just 2 km from the city of Valladolid. Pack your bathing suits for this once-in-a-lifetime swimming experience.
Rich in nutrients, Celestun inlet is home to thousands of pink flamingos and many other species of aquatic birds that feed in it's waters year round. A short one-hour drive brings you to this unforgetable site. Don't forget your camera
